You Feel Fine After Your Car Accident. Here’s Why That’s the Dangerous Part.

One of the most common things we hear from auto accident patients is: “I felt fine right after, so I didn’t think I needed to come in.”

We understand this can be a common assumption that happens after an accident. The crash was scary, but you walked away okay. You might have felt a little shaken and maybe a bit stiff, but nothing that seems serious.

But this is actually one of the biggest mistakes people make after a car accident, and it can lead to months or even years of chronic pain that could have been avoided. At Ponte Vedra Beach Chiropractic, Dr. Slossberg has been treating auto accident injuries for over 23 years, and he’ll tell you: the absence of immediate pain is not the same as the absence of injury.

Why Pain Is Often Delayed After a Crash

When your body experiences a traumatic event like a car accident, your adrenaline and cortisol can flood your system almost instantly. This is a built-in survival mechanism your body has and it helps masks pain brilliantly.

When you experience injuries to your soft tissue, spinal discs, and joints, you may not become symptomatic until 24 to 72 hours after the accident. Sometimes it takes even longer to feel pain or discomfort. By the time the soreness, stiffness, or headaches set in, inflammation has already taken hold, and the window for the most effective early treatment is narrowing.

Waiting to see if the pain “goes away on its own” often means the injury has more time to worsen and more time to become a chronic problem.

Common Auto Accident Injuries

Even low-speed collisions (under 15 mph) can cause significant structural damage to your spine and soft tissue. Here’s what we see most often:

  • Whiplash: this is when the neck snaps forward and backward faster than muscles can respond. It causes strained ligaments and misaligning vertebrae. Whiplash pain can cause symptoms like pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion which may not appear for days.
  • Herniated or Bulging Discs: this is force of impact can shift or compress spinal discs, causing them to bulge or herniate against nearby nerves. This often shows up as radiating arm or leg pain, numbness, or tingling.
  • Lower Back Strain: this is frequently dismissed as general soreness after a crash, lower back injuries are among the most common, and the most likely to become chronic without proper treatment.
  • Headaches: many post-accident headaches originate not in the head itself, but from the neck and upper spine. These are often missed when patients only seek emergency care.
  • Shoulder Injuries: can be caused by the impact of a crash which can affect shoulder joints, rotator cuff tissue, and the surrounding muscles, especially if your hands were on the wheel at the time of impact.

What Florida Law Says About Your Care (The 14-Day Rule)

Here’s something every Florida driver should know: Florida is a no-fault state, which means your own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance covers your medical treatment after a car accident, regardless of who was at fault.

That includes chiropractic care. But there’s a critical catch.

Florida’s PIP law requires you to seek treatment within 14 days of the accident or you may permanently lose your right to those benefits.

Florida PIP typically covers up to $10,000 in medical expenses when your injuries qualify as an Emergency Medical Condition (EMC). Even if you feel relatively okay, you may still qualify, and the only way to know is to get an evaluation.

Dr. Slossberg works with patients through the insurance process so you can focus on what matters: getting better.

How Chiropractic Care Treats Auto Accident Injuries

Unlike the emergency room, which focuses on ruling out life-threatening injury, chiropractic care addresses the structural and soft tissue damage that imaging often doesn’t catch, and that doesn’t show up right away.

At Ponte Vedra Beach Chiropractic, we begin with a full-body evaluation to help identify the issue. We put together a personalized treatment plan for each patient which may include the following:

  • Chiropractic Adjustments: which help with realigning the spine and pelvis, and reducing nerve pressure while restoring proper movement.
  • Spinal Decompression: this helps gently stretch the spine to help relieve pressure on injured discs and compressed nerves, allowing bulging tissue to retract naturally.
  • Class IV Laser Therapy: is used to help reduce inflammation and accelerates tissue healing at the cellular level. This can be particularly effective in the days immediately following an accident.
  • Therapeutic Massage: addresses soft tissue damage in the muscles and connective tissue that are often severely affected by the forces of impact.
  • Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS): provides targeted pain relief while stimulating muscle recovery and reducing swelling.

Our goal is to ensure the injury heals correctly so it doesn’t become a long-term source of pain or degeneration.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait

Soft tissue injuries that go untreated can develop into chronic pain conditions. Misaligned vertebrae left unaddressed can accelerate disc degeneration over months and years. What might take 4 to 8 visits to resolve in the first two weeks after an accident can become a much longer, more complicated recovery if you wait.

The sooner you come in, the better your outcome and the clock starts ticking the moment the accident happens.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

If you’ve never seen a chiropractor after an accident, here’s what the process looks like at our Ponte Vedra Beach clinic:

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: Dr. Slossberg will review how the accident happened, where you’re experiencing pain or restriction, and assess your spine for misalignment. He will also look for any nerve involvement or soft tissue damage. If imaging is needed, we’ll refer you appropriately.
  • Personalized Treatment Plan: this is based on your injury and goals, we’ll build a step-by-step care plan that may combine several of the treatments listed above.
  • Insurance Navigation: we accept most major insurance plans, Medicare, VA benefits, and HSA/FSA cards, and we’ll help you understand how your PIP coverage applies.

We also have a dedicated Auto Accident New Patient Welcome Packet to make your first visit as smooth as possible.
